OLVARD

Udstillingsperiode:  6. april – 1. juni

Inner chaos, an infinite kaleidoscope of thoughts and emotions, is a timeless theme in the human condition. For Oliver Jacob Theil Olsen (b. 1990), also known as Olvard, this is not just an abstract idea but an integral aspect of his life. “Art is chaos, and chaos is me,” he explains.

Olvard's art goes beyond aesthetic experience; it's a journey into the dark corners of the soul. Inspired by decay, change, and chaos, he creates works that captivate both the eye and the mind. His paintings, featuring calligraphy, monstrous entities, and neon colors, are often vibrant and playful, yet always imbued with a profound, melancholic undertone. Through the use of mixed techniques, he manages to give shape to intangible emotions and invites the viewer to delve into the hidden, the unexplored, and the unknown.

The inspiration behind Olvard’s works springs from contemporary art, street art and graffiti, and shaped by his explorative approach to a varied palette of materials and textures. His favorite materials and tools range from acrylic and spray paint to everyday items like brooms, soy, and coffee.

Olvard always keeps one of his sketchbooks close at hand, allowing him to capture thoughts and transfer them onto paper while still immersed in the feeling. Ideas in these sketchbooks evolve over time and inspire the continuous development of larger works.

“I translate my frustrations into drawings,” he says of his creative process. The artist explains that he has always found solace and understanding in art when medication falls short. Since childhood, he has loved painting large works and could spend several weeks on a single piece. The artist often turns to the canvas to express his inner struggles. Painting serves as a tool for navigating a world filled with chaos and confusion.

Works are created both at his residence near Holbæk and with his family in Vesterbro. In his shared living space, Olvard has taken over a portion of the common area for his creative endeavors.

In the communal area of his housing cooperative, Olvard has dedicated a corner to his artistic practice. Here, he works on multiple paintings simultaneously, amidst pool tables, lounge areas, and cozy nooks. Papers and canvases are heaped in stacks, hung on walls and scattered across the floor. The work desk brims with old sketches, paintbrushes, and spray paint cans. While it may seem chaotic on the surface, for Olvard, it all makes sense.

"Art is a way to feel that my head is attached to my body, and painting goes beyond what medicine can do.”

The works are characterized by a contrast between dark emotions and subtle humor, often infused with hidden messages and undertones. The artist has recently begun exploring neon colors, citing their ability to facilitate deeper connections with others.

This exhibition marks a new wave as the artist challenges his usual expression with his new works. +28 is Copenhagen Outsider Art Gallery's twenty-eighth exhibition on Gl. Kongevej, and the artist's debut here is celebrated with a solo exhibition.
