Collection: Martin Christian John Hansen
Martin Christian John Hansen, is a Copenhagen based self-taught artist. Growing up in North Zealand, Martin tried various activities and sports, but nothing aroused as much interest as painting. Encouraged by a talented artist with a workshop in the old shipyard in Helsingør, Martin began to explore his style and medium, initially by painting with acrylics, pastel and pencil and eventually oil. For a while Martin struggled to find his voice and place in art, his dissatisfaction developed into doubt and restlessness. A restlessness that is in some way still present in the calm and undisturbed still lifes he paints today. At a glance, Martin's paintings look like a mundane moment. But the 'imperfect' framing of each painting makes one wonder what he might be trying to say? What does he want to capture? Is it something that you see or is it what you don't see? This very imperfection grows even more beautiful in the day and age of aesthetically curated social media content. The dull colour palette lends itself to the humdrum, ordinary moment. His paintings are of a moment in time and yet timeless. To some it can evoke a feeling of nostalgia of standing in one's father's garage. For others, a possibility of a new DIY project. And yet to a few, a house chore waiting to be completed. Whatever may it be, we can all relate to these quiet, dreary moments lurking in the forgotten corners of our home.
